Full Day Ride to the Yorkshire Wolds returning via NYM 6th August 2022

Alan Beattie, Pete Tidball, John Cowles, Chris Hoare, Chris Otter, Tim Andrews, David Budd.

The briefing took place with an overview of the ride route which was un-recce’d and quickly put together, it was also the first route plotted on a new new Sat Nav. (might be some U turns!) Safety and hazards were also discussed for the day. John Cowles kindly volunteered to be back marker. The weather forecast was good unlike previous weeks.

Turning right to Sherburn we then heading towards Cawood taking a right turn off the B1222 onto Scalm Lane circling Cawood common taking us to Cawood Bridge via some interesting roads, a few of us hadn't been on before.

Over the bridge to Escrick, Weldrake, Elvington then through Sutton upon Derwent. After the lights through Sutton upon Derwent we took a right turn to Storwood. Tim & I encountered a Land Rover who maybe thought it was a one way road! After a brief stop for a couple of minutes for everyone to catch up at Storwood we proceeded to Ash Lane passing Melbourne Raceway towards Bielby, Allerthorpe enjoying various types of roads. At the A1079 Services roundabout we took the road into Pocklington. Through Pocklington we headed to Millington Woods via Kilnwick Percy, only encountering a few walkers and cyclists good progress was made through the scenic valley with Paraglider’s flying taking advantage of the good weather also. Turning left at the end of the Millington woods road we headed to the A166 onto Seaways Cafe.

Beattie 3Lunch was at Ravenscar Tearooms, setting off from Seaways we took a left onto the A166 to Wetwang which was in the opposite direction to Ravenscar, we then took a right turn at Wetwang onto the B1248 to Tibthorpe, Kirkburn then towards Driffield. At the 2nd roundabout on the bypass we took a right into Driffield then within a few hundred yards a sharp left which takes us back over the Wolds on an excellent road back to Cowlam called Spellowgate. On reaching Cowlam we headed to Helperthorpe taking a sharp left at the end of the village over interesting roads and views of the Wolds, carefully negotiating the loose gravel that has been washed off the fields, heading East on White Gate Road which runs parallel with the A64 down the hillside past the beacon located on the hillside (not sure when its used) arriving at the Sherburn traffic lights on the A64.

Crossing the A64 at Sherburn we took a right onto Hudgin Lane this road promoted discussion at the lunch stop as one of the most uneven roads T5 had been on. At the end of Hudgin Lane we took a right onto the A170 to Ayton then a left on the enjoyable road to Hackness. Once through Hackness we encountered approximately 15 AC Cobras coming towards us with there distinctive engine sound. We rode parallel with the A171 on twisty roads then finally joined the A171 for a short time taking a right to Ravenscar.

Ravenscar overlooks the coast of Robins hood bay, Raven Hall attracts many visitors as its a excellent hotel with stunning scenery, we followed the road to the right at Raven Hall to the end of the road, which is the location of the Tea Rooms.

The Tea rooms have recently been renovated to a very high Standard and set in a scenic location with ample parking, inside and outside seating which was ideal. The choice on the menu is excellent, including the Ravenscar Riser which promoted some discussion.

Pete and Chris elected for the Ravenscar Riser it consists of Bacon, Sausage & Egg in a toasted Breakfast Muffin, black pudding being an option. (you need a knife and fork to eat it) its certainly worth a return visit to sample, plus only a fiver.

We all enjoyed lunch and the facilities of the Tea Rooms, ready for the final route to NY 500 after some Team pictures.

Leaving Ravenscar heading back towards the A171 we re-joined it heading North. A couple of us overtook an extremely pristine looking American soft top Chevy maybe? Looked like he was also really enjoying the coastal road, he appeared to speed up after 2 of us overtook unabling the others to get past.

It was a busy day with classic car group outings encountering Caterham’s/Lotus Seven’s and other specialist car’s throughout the day plus the Cobras.

Taking a left off the A171 onto the B1416 then a sharp left to a village called Ugglebarny. Not a road I’ve been on the Sat Nav wanted to take us on another road which was a bit of a concern and not a road for U Turns. I followed my instincts and ignored the Sat Nav and arrived at Sleights as planned the Sat Nav came back on route. At Slights we took the right turn to Grosmont, Egton then taking the road over the Moors to Rosedale encountering very little traffic or cyclists to the A170. Turning left towards Pickering which would have taken us to NY 500. However we had made good progress so I took at right turn at Middleton off the A170 onto a more scenic and twisty route to Little Barugh, Kirby Misperton then to the NY500 for the final stop.

All arriving at the final destination we had being extremely lucky that we hadn't encountered any road works, having to take a detour. I was expecting some detours having not been on these roads recently and in some cases not at all, we also managed to avoid any U turns.

Well deserved refreshments were had including ice cream maybe not quite Brymor, it was made locally at Sneaton, also it was enjoyable.

John, Tim, Chris Hoare, David set off home on different routes. Chris took the lead with Pete and myself to Malton to the fuel station to replenish at £1.68 per litre!

Final run home was the most enjoyable Buttercrambe TT to round off the day led by Chris.

Many thanks to you all for attending the ride, hope you enjoyed it, also thanks John for carrying out back marker duties for the day.

I will try and upload a photograph of the route with the write up, if anyone requires a GPX file of the route please contact, I will send it via email.

Hope to see you next time
