Chris Otter's ride from Squires to Lealholme via Yorkshire Gliding Club with a final run to Fimber. 04-09-21

Posted on 09/09/21 |
There was a Committee meeting at Squires today which over ran the normal 10.00 set off but after a ride briefing and establishing John Coe as back marker, 10 riders set off in warmish dry weather for a full day ride.

Heading right out of Squires it was a familiar route down to Tadcaster but a change from the norm as we had the briefest time on the A64 before turning off towards Catton. Jaunting along a few of the meandering roads around here and then through Cattal, Whixley and Little Ouseburn.  From here it was a cross country run through Raskelf, Coxwold and Kilburn before going up White Horse Bank and into the Gliding Club.  Our first Team 5 visit here I think since the start of the pandemic but it hasn't subdued the cafe ladies banter and we all complied with she who must be obeyed!

Graham and Mike Vournas left the ride at this point while the rest of us lined up for the second leg.  After crossing the A170 and leaving via Sutton Bank Visitor Centre  we rode04 09 21 over the North York Moors passed Hawnby before picking up the "Helmsley TT".  A good lengthy run along here before turning towards Ingleby Greenhow where the road criss crosses the railway line before eventually arriving in Castleton (the North Yorkshire one not the Derbyshire one).  From here on through Danby until eventually arriving in Lealholme and the Shepherds Hall Tea Rooms. (spoiler alert here, the tea rooms are closing on Weds 9th September and the staff weren't aware of anyone taking over.  It will be a shame if it doesn't reopen).

After a leisurely lunch, and meeting up with Mark Johnson who joined us for the final leg we continued East to Egton Bridge before turning South down the old road to Pickering.  There are a couple of Fords  on this road but usually only one of them has any water flowing across it but it's a lovely road all the way to Pickering.  A bit of a stretch along the A170 now to Allerston but from there it was back to the curvy roads through Yedingham across the A64 and then on to Fimber via Sledmere.

A fine days riding by all, thanks to everyone for taking part and to John for back marker duties.
