Join Queen of Bikers Maria Costello as she leads IAM RoadSmart Skills Day for women riders this summer

With International Women’s Day coming up on Friday (8 March) IAM RoadSmart has announced that it has a women’s-only motorcycle Skills Day coming up this summer – being led by Queen of Bikers Maria Costello MBE.

Maria, former Guinness world record holder and IAM RoadSmart riding ambassador, will lead the Skills Day at Mallory Park on Tuesday 16 July.

This Skills Day is open to anyone with a full motorcycle licence and any road-legal motorbike. You do not have to be an IAM RoadSmart member to take part. Don’t forget that spaces are limited, so don’t waste any time to sign up.

During a day that aims to be fun as well as safe, riders taking part can expect to learn new techniques and gain greater understanding about the capability of their motorcycle from Maria herself. 

Expect to learn about your own capabilities and that of your machine; entry, apex and exit points, how they vary from road to circuit; where to brake, when and how much to brake, how it feels in an emergency; controlled, progressive, smooth cornering; and how to use the accelerator or throttle to add stability to the motorcycle when cornering.

The chance for women bikers to gain expert tuition from Maria with IAM RoadSmart is a special one and not to be missed.

She has made more than 40 starts at the daunting Isle of Man TT and returned there last summer. She became the first woman ever to claim a podium at the 2016 Classic TT alongside 23 times TT winner John McGuinness.

For five years Maria held the Guinness World Record as the fastest woman to lap the Isle of Man TT course when she lapped the Snaefell mountain course at an average speed of 114.73 mph in 2004.

Last year Maria became the first female President of the TT Riders Association in its 67 year history, and this year she will be back racing at all three international road races; the North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Ulster Grand Prix.

She said: “I am really looking forward to meeting and riding with women bikers at Mallory Park this summer. It’s a great chance for women riders to learn at their own pace, to build up their confidence, discover what they and their bikes are capable of, and most of all have fun in a safe way.”
