Watch: A Clean Start
Remember mum coming to visit with a car packed full of our favourite food and clean washing - what more could you ask for? Fast forward to life as adults and now it’s our turn to take care of our beloved mums.
We asked some of our members to tell us how their mum inspired them to take one of our Advanced Courses, or even to do it together. Here are some of their stories…
In secret she joined the IAM...
"My Father was in the Police force and was forever telling my mother how to drive, so in secret she joined the Institute of Advanced Motorists back in the early '80's and presented him with her certificate. His face was picture and long story short, all three of their daughters have done the same. All my children have benefitted and are observant drivers. In fact, I am now a Local Observer and looking forward to training to be a National Observer." - Lisa Collins
My mother was born in 1900...
"My mother was born in 1900 so never had to take a driving test! However, she taught my father, his brother, me, my brother and two of her grandchildren how to drive! My brother and I had just two lessons each from a driving instructor, mainly to be familiar with what was expected of us in the test which we both passed first time. She continued to drive very safely until the age of 92, when she decided that she no longer enjoyed it. We came back from a holiday one day and she just announced to us “I’ve sold the car” … and that was that!" - Tony Sarafian
My mum taught me to drive...
"My mum taught me to drive, and I had three lessons with a driving school to make sure she hadn’t missed anything! I had heard of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and by chance saw a stand organised by Merseyside Group of Advanced Motorists. I joined that day in 1974 and passed my test in 1975, soon becoming an Observer and then committee member.
My mum had always been a good driver and I encouraged her to join too, she was about 60 and passed first time. My mum joined the Sefton Group, where I was Chair at the time, she drove until she was 90. I never had to tell her when she should scale back her driving and then stop, she was very aware of her ability." - Stella Owen
