Toucan crossings are light-controlled crossings which allow cyclists and pedestrians to share crossing space and cross at the same time. They are push-button operated. Pedestrians and cyclists will see the green signal together. Cyclists are permitted to ride across.
It’s important to understand the different types of crossing so we can anticipate the different hazards each can bring.
Toucan Crossings allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross together. They are wider than other types of pedestrian crossing, so take care to stop before the stop line. As cyclists are not required to dismount, they may wobble whilst waiting and so fall into the road. Also, as many cyclists do not like stopping, they may just carry on without stopping to check whether they are clear to go.
