It is essential that all Observers maintain a good level of skills to deliver the Advanced Driver course effectively. To ensure that standards are maintained all Observers are encouraged to have a periodic Skill Check run with another Observer. There is no defined requirement for this but you will know if your Observing Skills are becoming rusty. Use the regular Skill Check sessions for this if you find yourself without an Associate to take out.
IAM RoadSmart require all National Observers to take a retest every 5 years. The format of the retest is similar to the initial test so should be familiar. Local Observer Assessors are retested every 3 years.
There is no current IAM RoadSmart requirement for Local Observers to be reassessed. MYAM however require that each Local Observer takes a Skill check run with an Associate and Local Observer Assessor once every 3 years, ideally done at a skill check session. A reminder will be sent out when the reassessment is due.
