Group Masters Scheme - Overview

The IAM RoadSmart Masters course is the ultimate recognition for a civilian driver to attain, taking the approach to driving to a higher level, with active planning and continuous concentration.  Masters is open to all IAM RoadSmart members.

HCNAD is offering a Group Masters Mentoring scheme whereby Group members accepted onto the scheme can receive Mentoring free of charge, so that they need only pay the Masters Test fee, which is currently £129, giving a saving of £120 on the full product price.  Our aim is to deliver a formal, planned and quality assured process providing a consistent and high-quality experience for all mentees.

If you are interested in the Group Masters Programme, the first step is to complete the registration form at www.hcnad.org.uk/masters.   You will then be offered an initial Masters assessment drive, carried out by an experienced Mentor. This will be an extended observed drive incorporating all the elements of a test route including the duration challenge – at least 90 minutes of observed driving.

Completion of the assessment will not necessarily mean admission on to a Masters training programme; where necessary further training will be recommended, and encouraged, with areas for further development identified in the assessment report, such as refresher training with a Group Observer.

If you are considered ready for the Masters training programme and would like to proceed, you will be asked to purchase the Masters test at £129 from IAM RoadSmart, as a demonstration of commitment to the programme. You can defer the test date until you have completed the training programme.

HCNAD Observers may qualify for a full refund of the Masters Test fee.  If you are an Observer, please contact the Observer Manager, who will consider your Observer activity and let you know if you qualify for this refund.  If so, then you can request the refund via the Group Expenses process.  Note however that:

  1. Observers who wish HCNAD to pay their Test fee will be expected to maintain their existing committed number of concurrent associates while training for the Masters.

  1. The retest fee if unsuccessful on Test will not be met by the Group, however requalification every five years will be considered for funding using the same criteria as for the initial Test.

As a member of the Group Masters scheme, you will be provided with:

  • Allocation to a single Mentor who will be responsible for delivering all your coaching;
  • A personal documented training programme;
  • The number of mentored drives required to achieve test standard (around 6 x 2 hour sessions). These drives are along the lines of the associate training process, but will be significantly longer and more intense than an associate drive, with typically at least two hours on the road, often more, and appropriate briefing and debriefing sessions;
  • For each drive, an extensive report with a clear plan of the areas for you to work on between mentored drives;
  • A copy of Roadcraft;
  • Attendance at a theory session;
  • A check drive before Test with a nominated experienced Mentor, who will provide a feedback report to you, your Mentor, and the Group Masters Co-ordinator;
  • Mentoring for a single retest in the event of it being needed.
