North York Moors Full Day ride to NY500/ Sandsend/Seaways 05/02/22

Alan Beattie, Martin Hutton, Pete Tidball, Chris Otter, John Jordan, Phil Marshall, Shane Massey.

First thing Saturday I had a bit of a panic, I noticed I’d received an email notifying that I was cancelled from the ride! My initial thought the ride had been cancelled somehow! would anyone turn up! After a few emails backwards and forwards to Ian it appeared I had only been cancelled (by mistake easily done) fortunately only Ian and I had received the email, the ride was still live! Many thanks Ian for the clarification.

The ride briefing discussed safety and maybe the need to alter the route if weather conditions were to change from the recent forecast, overview of the planned route was also summarised.

Pete took up back marker duties as he was keen to bed in his new tyres.

We left Squires just after 10am turning right towards the familiar roads to Cawood, Escrick, Stamford Bridge and crossing the A64 after Claxton through Flaxton and all enjoying the road up to Castle Howard, turning right to Coneysthorpe crossing the B1257 to Amotherby, Great Habton, Kirby Misperton arriving at the NY500 Cafe.

After refreshments at NY500 we all lined up for the team photo (Pete got distracted by something

Next stop Sandsend for Lunch travelling via Chimney Bank.

Turning right back to Kirby Misperton through Little Barugh we took a sharp right turn before Great Barugh down Wandale Lane towards Marton then turning right to Little Edstone crossing the A170 to Hutton le Hole.

Weather conditions were looking ok only encountering some spots of rain, road conditions good so we proceeded across to Chimney bank enjoying the views dropping down into Rosedale.

From Rosedale we proceeded up Knott Road encountering a bit of a cross wind at the top which was soon behind us as we took a right turn down a single track road (New way) towards Fryup, only being met on this road by a lone cyclists heading the other way!

Enjoying the views on this road we dropped down the valley past the Danby Castle ruin, constructed in the 14th century.

In the 16th century John Neville married Catherine Parr which was there home, Catherine Parr was then later to become the 6th wife of Henry V111 out living him.

We crossed the river Esk via the Ford which was dry and headed to Danby Beacon which also has spectacular views of the coastline and Scaling Reservoir.

Danby beacon dates back to the 16th century when the country was at threat from an invasion from the French fleet. A soldier and his wife lived here and would light up the beacon if there was a threat which would be the first inland fire warning. In the 1930s it became home to one of the first radar stations guarding the North East.

Leaving Danby Beacon we headed towards the A171 then to the B1266 enjoying the flowing roads to Sandside cafe, an added bonus for us all was being able to park directly opposite.

We all enjoyed lunch and the efficient service. After lunch we all headed off to Seaways for the final stop.

Skirting the top side of Whitby we headed down the coast road taking a right turn to Harwood Dale, Silpho then negotiating the tricky bends down into Hackness onto East Ayton, taking a right turn onto the A170. Just through Ruston we took a left turn down Hudgin Lane which is a single track road which is quite uneven on some sections causing some undulations!

At Sherburn we crossed the A64 taking the first right onto White Gate heading over the hills to Seaways for a well earned cup of tea & cake.

The route went as planned for the day taking in a variety of roads, weather conditions were better than expected enjoying dry conditions, quite roads, some cross winds were encountered in exposed areas at times, if hadn't been for the mud on the road heading to Squires we may not have needed to clean the bikes!

Final destination was now home heading for Fuel stations after a full days ride. Pete led us back down the popular route to Buttercrambe and we all peeled off near York.

Many thanks to all for joining the ride and hope you enjoyed the route and got home before it started raining heavy.

Thank you Pete for carrying out back marker duties, hopefully the new tyres are now bedded in.

See you next time:
