OD Ride to Malham, Tony Burns, 17th August

Posted on 19/08/19 |
Lead : Tony Burns – BM : Graham West
Malham via Cock Pit Farm

A good turn out today as the sun tried to come out and the weather was breezy but warm and the deluge of Fridays rain heading to Europe meant a decent days riding was eagerly awaited, and after a quick brief from Tony we lined up at the gate ( Steve Harrison getting his check ride done on part 1 of the ride ) and away we went using the Lotherton, Towton route to Tadcaster and over to Wighill, Thorpe Arch before a Right up to the B1224 ( York Rd ) and Left into Wetherby, traffic was light and a good pace was maintained by everyone, made for an enjoyable first stint.

Through Wetherby with little issues and out toward ( all the usual villages ) Sicklinhall, Clap Gate, Kirkby Overblow before a quick Left / Right on the A61 had us cutting over toward Weeton and the A658 Harrogate Road toward Poole in Wharfedale before turning Right onto the B6161 and Farnley and dropping down into the outskirts of Otley, cutting through a housing estate to get to Weston Lane and the run up the Hill ( Avoiding the Tree Branches our Farmer friends had knocked off with his piled high baled straw Trailer ) ODRide170819_1to our T&P Stop at Cockpit Farm, where the good weather had us dining alfresco along with the large quantities of wasps and a few chickens, after the team Piccy / queue for the loo, etc. it was time to remount for part 2 of the ride.

A right turn to Askwith and across to Middleton and a nice twisty trip over the moor before dropping down into Beamsley and turning Right to the A59, and through Bolton Abbey (Queuing to get under the tiny 10'6” little bridge) before turning left to go up and over the tops to Embsey, wonderful views looking left over the Valley and Billy Bobs Ice Cream parlour, dropping into Skipton, and out again to cross the A59 and head out to the B6265 Grassington Rd and Left in Rylstone over to Hetton, Kirkby Malham and finally (A very busy)  Malham for our Lunch stop, again dining alfresco, but it was so busy some dined standing up outside using the wall as an impromptu table.

A really enjoyable ride was had by all, Tony doing another great route, so much so that we extended the ride after lunch to go up over Malham Moor ( fantastic views in the sunny weather )  to Arncliffe before heading back to Grassington (Some riders peeling off for York  and Bolton Abby, some peeling off for a 'P' stop,:):):),  ignore the first part of the route as that's me coming back from Sheffield and the last part as that's 4 of us heading back to Squires ( I've not learnt how to chop those bits out yet ).
