Ride to Hornsea and back - PT - 8/1/22

Posted on 16/01/22 |

Well it was looking like a reet wet ride as we set off from Squires at 10:30, to give the weather a chance to slacken off a bit, but in fact it wasn't actually raining after the briefing.  A commendable 7 adventurers (loonies) turned up for this challenge, we were basically going to yomp across to the East Coast to Hornsea Mere, about 1 1/2 hours Pete said, and guess wot, it was.

But more of that later on, in an effort to avoid too much mud etc. the route was pretty straight forward but not too much main road work.  To limber up we went straight through Sherburn to Cawood and on to Escrick then Wheldrake, Elvington Sutton on Derwent, where the mill house is now a crumbling shell (I've watched this decay over so many years and now regret not taking a piccy occasionally to record its demise).  Anyway a quick wiggle onto and off the A1079 through Barmby Moor, into Pocklington (still no rain) and up the excellent flowing B1246 and into Warter, but wait was that precipitation on the visor?

Ooops, it was a little rain but not too much, more like a light shower, but by the time we got to North Dalton and thence to Driffield it had set in to a fairly steady light rain.
When we got onto the brilliant B1249 to the East coast the rain did take the shine off the excellent bend work although mostly the mud had been washed off which helped.  However, through Beeford and on the final leg of said B road through Skipsea and down to Hornsea Mere we were definitely more than damp, and then, and then, the blinking Cafe was shut!!  It said it was open on the website :-(

MrMoos080122Ah, here's the team @ Mr Moos in a mist, cold lense created the mist - DOH!
So it was back to Mr Moos just outside Skipsea as the final Lunch/Dinner break, actually a bit more Covidly spaced anyway.
What a difference an hour or so makes, when we re-emerged it had stopped raining oh yes! :-)
2 of the team went home but the last 5 decided to return via Seaways, just for the laugh, where 3 actually went in for a final cuppa.  Interestingly there were no other bikes there and one of the loverly lasses declared we were just about the only ones all day, wimps.

All in all we agreed it had actually been a brill ride despite getting a bit wet and muddy and the wet riding skills were none the worse for it.
So thanks for stirling work at the rear by Nigel and Mike and to all the team who bothered to turn up! ;-))
