Martin Eason’s Mildly Hair raising route - 30th July

Posted on 30/07/22 |

So after COVID we thought we were free to ride, but a damp night caused a few of the group to come down with severe cases of “Dryrideritus”, resulting in 6 all weather bandits setting off from a dry Squires.

Left out of Squires and a few familiar escape routes passing through Abberford and to the A64 roundabout. A right towards Thorp Arch and the Sat Nav strikes again, deciding I needed to go home!! So a spell of freestyle takes us through Tadcaster and round to Boston Spa, where the Sat Nav suddenly remembers we are on a preset route!! Back on track.

Heading north through Walton, heading towards Cattal, but what’s this? A left turn before we get there and away we head towards North Deighton and a fantastic road up to Knaresborough, slowed only by an Ambulance.

Around the back of Knaresborough and then Scriven where the Hair Raising bit pops up as Andrian’s rear hugger decides to make its escape!! Luckily spotted while passing a garage, who kindly leant some tools to sort it out.

Back on the road and up to Lingerfield, Occaney, Bishop Monkton, West Wick and on to Boroughbridge, predominantly on new routes!!

Passing through Boroughbridge, Milburn, Brafferton, Tholthorpe and finally into Raskelf for a well earned brew and great food. And then came the rain and it certainly came down hard. Good job we were inside.

The discussion over lunch was continue to Fimber, or Bike shop? Yep Bike shop it was. The rain stopped, Jim headed for home, a mile away while the rest of us went into amphibious mode, avoiding road lakes and puddles as we headed towards York and the lure of new bikes at Optimum Bikes at Bilborough Top.

Jude took the lead and apparently it wasn’t a U Turn, but a circular route as we back tracked an old favourite. Yes including Aldwark Bridge, Cattal Askham Richard and finish.

Thanks all!! Great company and I certainly enjoyed new routes. And we stayed dry!!
