  • What is this Dutch Reach thing anyway?

    The Dutch Reach is designed to protect cyclists from riding into car doors opened by unobservant drivers or passengers. Instead of the driver opening the door with their right hand, risking not looking round before exiting the car, the ‘Dutch Reach’ sees the motorist using their left hand instead.

    The Highway Code changes significantly from the 29th January 2022. This article sets out the changes as shown on the official government pages. Many articles in the media are incomplete and may miss some of the finer points. Changes do not detract from the responsibility of ALL road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, to have regard for their own and other road users’ safety.

    The Highway Code has new rules and changes to some existing rules. A total of 33 existing rules have been amended and two new rules introduced, with a number of amendments made to the additional information annexes.     IAM RoadSmart study finds that one-in-five drivers and riders are more anxious about being on the road since lockdown • More than four-in-five motorists felt they weren’t getting the mental health support they needed and admitted to ‘suffering in silence’ • Almost two thirds of people are worried about giving someone a lift from the fear of catching COVID-19 • Further periods off the road, such as a local lockdown or a second national lockdown, could have road safety implications, says the IAM.

I have had Austin, Alfa, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Daihatsu, Datsun, Fiat, Hillman, Lada, Mazda, Morris, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Skoda, Triumph, Vauxhall and VW. This led me to think about what the important things really are in a car.

  • Getting Ready for Driving After Lockdown

    During the past few weeks I have noticed that as I take my daily walk it appears to me that the traffic is moving at a greater speed than usual. I believe my view is supported by many people and indeed the police have advised that despite the low volume of traffic due to “lockdown” the speed limits have not been suspended.

    When the present nastiness eventually passes and, if we survive, the world we knew before corona virus may have changed a great deal. It is the new normal to not directly meet friends, relatives and colleagues, and strides are being made into socially isolated electronic connections. It is normal to spend huge amounts of time in the close company of our nearest and dearest and we are made to feel guilty even if we venture forth for exercise or a trip to the supermarket.
