It’s been a soggy few weeks for many in the UK but, with temperatures set to rise over the next few days, IAM RoadSmart is here to help you be prepared before setting off on those summer rides and to know how to keep your cool this summer.

Richard Gladman, Chief Examiner at IAM RoadSmart (also a keen motorcyclist himself), is on hand to give his expert advice on keeping yourself and your bike cool throughout the summer months.

Wear a suitable jacket

A lot of motorcycle jackets have thermal and waterproof layers. If it’s a sweltering day and they’re not needed, take them out to help you stay cool. Even better, you might choose to buy a summer jacket with vents to avoid overheating.

Protect your eyes

If you’re going to be keeping your visor up, be sure to wear protective eye gear. Your helmet will also accommodate for this weather by having air ventilation, but do you know how to use yours? If not, it may be a good time to check with the retailer.

Leave the gloves on

Don’t fall into the trap of being tempted to ride without gloves. They’re a must for any journey – short or long. You can buy protective gloves that allow air flow which will make your summer journey more comfortable.

Footwear is key

Are you still wearing your winter boots? It’s time to put those back in the cupboard and get yourself a pair of summer boots, these are another great piece of kit for air ventilation whilst offering all the key safety features.

Take a break

Warm weather and overheating can increase fatigue [EM1]so make sure you stay hydrated and take regular breaks. In a car, we recommend stopping for a break every two hours, however on a motorbike you may need to stop more than regularly.

Richard Gladman says:

“Don’t be tempted to cut corners as you’re just as likely to fall off your bike in the summer as you are at any other time of the year. Investing in the right summer riding kit will allow air ventilation, whilst upholding all the key safety measures. This way you can have a relaxed journey and enjoy the warm weather while it lasts.”
