We make better drivers and riders

About IAM RoadSmart

At IAM RoadSmart we make better drivers and riders. As the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, formed in 1956, we’ve spent more than 60 years making our roads safer by improving driver and rider skills through coaching and education.

Our qualified experts, our network of thousands of volunteers and around 180 local groups are our lifeblood. They champion our cause and help drive our vision – to be the best, most recognised provider of coaching and advice for all post-licence drivers and riders, and to help make our roads safer for all.

Our mission:

    1. To improve the standards of driving and riding on the roads
    2. To improve road safety
    3. To administer a nationally recognised advanced test

We can help you:

      • Gain the expert skills and techniques on the road to take your love of driving or riding to the next level – and to make one of the most qualified drivers or riders on the road
      • Focus on specific areas of your driving and riding to help boost your confidence behind the wheel and refresh your knowledge of the rules of the road

Our Heritage

As a registered UK charity formed in 1956, our aim has remained the same – to make our roads safer by developing the skills of drivers and riders through training and education.

We achieve this by providing a range of services to individuals and businesses, including the respected advanced driving qualification, driving assessments and confidence-boosting courses such as motorway driving, parking or handling commercial vehicles. Here's a look at some of our key moments:

1962Launch of our first test for commercial drivers

1976 - Launch of our advanced motorcycling courses and test

1986 - Fleet training begins for business drivers

1995 - The first IAM RoadSmart minibus test arrives

2002 - Our new head office in Chiswick opens its doors

2003 - Our campaign for safer road design begins

2010 - IAM RoadSmart continues to drive progress through education

2016 - We celebrate our 60th birthday and our new headquarters in Welwyn Garden City opens

Today all our programmes and companies are united under the single IAM RoadSmart brand – reflecting the huge changes we’ve seen take place on UK roads since we started. Our customers are post-licence drivers and riders, of any age and ability.

Our services are designed to teach new skills, improve existing ones and provide confidence and knowledge to get the most from being on the road. Our unrivalled knowledge and experience means we also influence government policy through authoritative advice and research.

Our Standards

Our Team

We ensure high standards across everything we do, from the performance expected of our local groups to ensuring candidates who pass our courses are measured to a consistently high quality. Our standards team writes and oversees the content of all our courses to ensure they reflect our core values and road safety ethos.

Accreditation of our courses

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) quality assures our Advanced Driver course each year, randomly sending examiners to observe our tests to ensure we maintain required standards. The DVSA also checks the content of our drink-drive rehabilitation courses.

Our volunteer observers in IAM groups are also accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), and we have two levels of accreditation: Local and National Observer. Our courses for business drivers are undertaken by trainers who are qualified Advanced Driving Instructors.

External accreditation by the IAM

IAM RoadSmart accreditation is highly sought after by driver training organisations in the UK and across the world. Our standards team oversees the technical content of our accreditation process to ensure courses delivered by accredited organisations meet or exceed our Advanced Test.

Successful drivers or riders receive membership by exemption. We also accredit other organisations to deliver their own driver or rider training if the standards meet certain requirements. They are then allowed to display our logo on training material and certificates.

We have the ISO 39001 Road Safety Standard.
