The UK’s biggest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, has appointed four new trustees keen to use their wealth of knowledge and experience to help the organisation make UK roads even safer.

Nick Lomas, John Jenkins, Nick Stein and Stuart Donald, QPM join existing trustees Dr Gina Bromage, Dr Catherine Lloyd and Elizabeth Coyle-Camp, under the leadership of recently appointed chairman Derek McMullan and chief executive officer Mike Quinton.

Nick Lomas (from Sussex) is director general of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. He is an elected board member of the UK Tourism Alliance, the representative body of the UK tourism industry. He is also a member of the FIA (International Automobile Federation) Region 1 management council guiding the mobility, advocacy and road safety work of the organisation.

John Jenkins (from East Anglia) brings to IAM RoadSmart significant experience of FTSE 100-size firms in the financial services arena, being a highly experienced senior manager and executive director in the areas of sales, marketing and strategy. An active motorcyclist all his adult life, John is an advanced motorcycle tutor who also sits on the local Road Casualty Reduction Panel for motorcycling and as a magistrate.

Nick Stein (from Cheshire) is a former airline training captain with 35 years’ experience of flight safety and pilot training. After university, Nick joined the RAF as a pilot, flying C-130 Hercules aircraft on worldwide operations including famine relief in Ethiopia, duty in the Falklands and the Gulf and supporting UN peacekeeping. He flew for easyJet for 17 years and in his career amassed over 18,000 flying hours. Nick recently retired from commercial flying and divides his time between IAM RoadSmart observing and running his business, Spitfire Books.

Stuart Donald QPM (from NE England) brings with him 30 years of policing experience at Humberside Police, having retired in 2015 as an Assistant Chief Constable. He has experience in traffic policing and was a Class 1 police advanced driver. Since 2015 he has provided specialist policing consultancy including police leadership and community policing training, and between 2016 and 2019 he operated as a traffic policing expert in the Middle East.

Derek McMullan said: “I am delighted to have Nick, John, Nick and Stuart join IAM RoadSmart as trustees at an important time for road safety.

“They join our existing trustees, management and staff, in contributing to the cause at a time of extensive and rapid automotive technological development, with roads that are getting ever busier and new design philosophies being adopted.

“These new appointments will ensure IAM RoadSmart remains relevant in a fast- changing world.”
