At IAM RoadSmart, our volunteers are the fuel in our tank! Without them, we simply wouldn't be able to work towards safer journeys for all.
That's why we launched the Volunteer Support Fund, a fund aimed at removing barriers and providing
adjustments to our volunteers impacted by a disability or health condition. Our volunteers dedicate their time and expertise to making journeys safer for everyone. With your support, we can ensure they have all they need to succeed. Throughout the
summer, we aim to raise £5,000 to establish the Volunteer Support Fund and open the first round of requests from our network of over 5,000 volunteers across the UK. Every donation counts!
Tina Lannin volunteers as the Chair of the North Down Advanced Motorists Group (NDAM). Born deaf into a family of hearing people, she had to learn early how to lip-read to get by and is now one of the UK’s foremost lip-reading experts.
Tina's passion for driving and road safety is unshaken. Her volunteer journey started with wanting to sharpen her roadcraft skills:
"My Observer, David Harcourt, played a crucial role in my development. He helped
me engage fully with the course and succeed, which inspired me to give back. I wanted to pay it forward and help others experience the same success.
I was truly impressed by the dedication, motivation, and professionalism of the committee members.
They are a wonderful group of people who genuinely appreciate the skills and experiences each member brings to the table. When you feel respected and valued, it makes volunteering an incredibly rewarding experience, and I wanted to be part of that
dynamic."
To fully participate in committee meetings and observer training, Tina relies on live captioning support. This essential service allows her to contribute effectively and ensures IAM RoadSmart remains inclusive. In her words:
"I am totally deaf, which makes group meetings especially challenging for me. Lip-reading is impossible when multiple people speak at once, so I rely heavily on live captioning support. The Volunteer Support Fund significantly
enhances my ability to contribute. With this support, I can engage more deeply and further develop my role within the group.
On a broader level, seeing accessibility championed by IAM RoadSmart would likely inspire others to offer their services,
creating a more inclusive environment for everyone. It’s a win-win scenario for all involved. It’s an honour to know that my story may inspire others to support accessibility initiatives. Being able to contribute to a more inclusive environment
means a great deal to me"
By contributing to the Volunteer Support Fund, you are directly helping individuals like Tina, enabling them to continue their lifesaving work. As Tina says, "inclusivity boosts both the individual’s contribution and the collective team effort". Every donation counts to support our volunteers to go further!
