It’s #FormulaDriveSmart – the video! Watch the UK’s best young racing talent become road car stars too

Posted on 09/01/19 |

This new year begins with 15 new young advanced drivers on the roads – and IAM RoadSmart has produced a video showing their path to getting what is regarded as one of the best post-test driving achievements you can buy.

IAM RoadSmart, the UK’s biggest independent road safety charity, teamed up with the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) to put the club’s Rising Stars and SuperStars through a two-day version of the full advanced driving course and test which is available at £149 to any driver with a full licence in the UK.

#FormulaDriveSmart was hosted at the home of British motor racing, Silverstone.

Those stars, who are all age between 18 and 24, included Volkswagen British Touring Car star Bobby Thompson, 2018 MINI JCW Champion Ant Whorton-Eales, 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup runner-up James Dorlin and 2018 GP3 Asia Champion Raoul Hyman.

Mike Quinton, IAM RoadSmart Chief Executive Officer, said: “These are some of the best up-and-coming young racing drivers in the UK, snapping at Lewis Hamilton’s heels to prove themselves the best of the best.

“But for all those track skills, we wanted to see if they could turn those skills into real-life safer driving skills on the roads.”

After the intensive training, all the 15 drivers took their advanced test in full test conditions – and all of them passed with flying colours.

Mike added: “We at IAM RoadSmart are passionate about improving the skills of young drivers as they head out onto the roads for the first time. Young men in their teens and early 20s are still the most likely to be involved in a serious or fatal car crash – more likely than any other age of motorist.

“These top young racers took part in #FormulaDriveSmart so enthusiastically, clearly showing that not only is advanced driving fun, it’s very relevant to young drivers.  It equips them with the skills to spot a road safety issue well in advance of it happening, and could save their own life or that of another road user one day.”

IAM RoadSmart believes that road safety education should be a part of the National Curriculum, and Graduated Driving Licences should operate across the UK for all drivers under 24. We are awaiting trials to potentially start in Northern Ireland later this year.
