Membership by Exemption

At IAM RoadSmart, we welcome professional drivers and riders from a range of backgrounds, including those from the emergency services and institutions such as RoSPA.

We recognise that they already hold selected driving or riding qualifications and that is why we have removed our membership entry requirements for them. They can become IAM RoadSmart members without the need to pass our Advanced Driver or Rider test.

Help make a difference to road safety

As a professional driver or rider, your skills and knowledge already help to keep the roads safe. Whether you are responding to emergency situations, expertly driving a large military vehicle, or holding an existing qualification from another institution, your skills will be right at home at IAM RoadSmart.

By joining IAM RoadSmart you become part of a community of like-minded people – drivers and riders – who work together to make the roads a better and safer place. Your knowledge and experience will be invaluable in helping others understand how to become better drivers and riders.

Recognised Qualifications

In order to apply for membership by exemption you just need to buy the relevant membership product and when asked, send us proof of your driving or riding qualifications. You can find a list of recognised qualifications below.

If yours aren’t listed, please get in touch as we may still be able to honor your professional training:

Testimonials

"I became a member by exemption having successfully passed my Advanced car and motorcycle grades during my Police service back in the late 1990s. Keen to pass on what I had learnt; I have been an IAM RoadSmart member ever since! I’ve taken the role of examiner for car and bike taking regular tests; the next steps for me are the Masters Mentor and National Observers Assessor role. I regularly speak to local groups and have found IAM RoadSmart a dependable in-depth product, delivered by passionate people with an overall desire to raise the standards of riding and driving."

"Having retired from the Police I became the Advanced Motorcycle trainer for Avon and Somerset Police. I felt the connection between what I try and achieve with my students and the aims of the IAM RoadSmart in relation to safety for all road users. After becoming a member, I completed the observer qualification which felt like a similar role to what I was used to. I am motivated to support IAM RoadSmart where possible. As well as completing the observer qualification I have attended skills days, working alongside many IAM RoadSmart employees. We can always learn from others, and I am keen to become more involved in the not-too-distant future. You benefit greatly from being part of IAM RoadSmart."
